Combined RF Current Drive and Bootstrap Current in Tokamaks

چکیده

By calculating radio frequency current drive (RFCD) and the bootstrap current in a consistent kinetic manner, we find synergistic effects in the total noninductive current density in tokamaks [1]. We include quasilinear diffusion in the Drift Kinetic Equation (DKE) in order to generalize neoclassical theory to highly non-Maxwellian electron distributions due to RFCD. The parallel plasma current is evaluated numerically with the help of the FASTFP Fokker-Planck code [2]. Current drive efficiency is found to be significantly affected by neoclassical effects, even in cases where only circulating electrons interact with the waves. Predictions of the current drive efficiency are made for lower hybrid and electron cyclotron wave current drive scenarios in the presence of bootstrap current.

Numerical Studies and Simulation of the Lower Hybrid Waves Current Drive by using Fokker – Planck Equation in NSST and HT-7 Tokamaks

Recent experiments on the spherical tokamak have discovered the conditions to create a powerful plasma and ensure easy shaping and amplification of stability, high bootstrap current and confinement energy. The spherical tours (ST) fusion energy development path is complementary to the tokamak burning plasma experiment such as NSTX and higher toroidal beta regimes and improves the design of a po...

Theoretical Studies on Neoclassical Tearing Modes and Their Stabilization

Numerical simulation results for the nonlinear evolution of neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs) and the stabilization of NTMs by localized RF current drive are presented. It is shown that the saturated island width does not increase linearly with the local bootstrap current density fraction. The NTMs are found to be stabilized by a localized RF current drive, if a sufficiently large RF current is...

A Review of Fusion and Tokamak Research Towards Steady-State Operation: A JAEA Contribution

Providing a historical overview of 50 years of fusion research, a review of the fundamentals and concepts of fusion and research efforts towards the implementation of a steady state tokamak reactor is presented. In 1990, a steady-state tokamak reactor (SSTR) best utilizing the bootstrap current was developed. Since then, significant efforts have been made in major tokamaks, including JT-60U, ex...

Electron Cyclotron Current Drive in Spherical Tokamaks with Application to ITER

The high-β spherical tokamaks (ST), such as NSTX and MAST, are attractive fusion devices for studying the physics of current drive by electron cyclotron (EC) waves. While ST plasmas are overdense to conventional EC waves, electron Bernstein waves (EBW) can be used to generate plasma currents. Besides providing better confinement, EBW driven current can also help suppress neoclassical tearing mo...

Electron cyclotron current drive efficiency in an axisymmetric tokamak

The neoclassical transport theory is applied to calculate electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) efficiency in an axisymmetric tokamak in the low-collisionality regime. The tokamak ordering is used to obtain a system of equations that describe the dynamics of the plasma where the nonlinear ponderomotive (PM) force due to high-power RF waves is included. The PM force is produced around an elect...
